Battles - The Yabba

Okay first of all this video is beautiful. And Battles have an amazing record of producing fun and unique videos for their music, as Warp Records also have quite a history of amazing videos. And this is another piece that fits with that heritage.

The idea is so simple, but executed so well. And like with most things, a simple premise, established, then embellished, escalating and morphing. Growing until it folds into itself... is a great way to go. Like motifs in a symphony. Play the theme, change it build on it, invert it. Keep going.

The audience learns the piece as it continues. It almost becomes teaching music in itself, calling back to past phrases or ideas and combining them over time. And as the audience learns these ideas and sees them bent and changed as they are implimented, they are rewarded in novelty.

We can see all of this here with the idea of orbiting and rotation. Building changing growing. It's really wonderfully done.
